Recipe for midlife change

When the kids were little, I'd often make Little Pear and Cinnamon Cakes from a good ol' Women's Weekly cookbook for babies and toddlers.
Such a simple, yummy recipe. Usually gobbled up by kids and adults alike.
Over the years, I’ve tweaked the recipe, made it my own. You know how you do.
These days I have a version I make so often that all I really need is a pear and I’m good to go.
Which feels kinda fitting.
Because here I am now in later midlife, young adult kids, second marriage, self-employed, living a more values-based life than I could ever have imagined back then.
But it meant letting go of how life should look like.
A bit like that recipe, I’ve evolved into today’s version of me. And I hope to goddess I keep changing.
But being at least second generation control freak, it hasn't been easy. It triggers some pretty deep fears that have taken years to get to the root of.
As unsettling as it is, change really is the point. Even when it's deeply uncomfortable.
Here’s the part I’m sitting with more and more these days - making room for other people’s change, not just my own.
Learning to stand nearby and say, I trust you with your life. I’m here but you’ve got this. You can trust yourself.
Letting the people we love learn, discover, make mistakes and freaking grow.
What feels truer now is permission. Permission to change. Permission to not have it all figured out.
Permission to let life look different than expected.
For me and the people I love. For all of us, really.
Courage in midlife is daring to question what we were handed down, and choosing freedom over the fears that once kept us safe.
One tool that's helped me over the years is connecting to 'trust and surrender'. Some of my clients call it 'trust and allow'. It's more than a concept, it's a nervous system regulator and anchor. If the nudge is there for you to receive more support taking a leap in 2026, an Initial Session is the perfect next step > Book Here or keep an eye out for the next Courage in Midlife workshop.
Here's the updated recipe, if you’d like to try my revised version. I've swapped out regular flour for oat flour, something I do in a lot of my recipes these days.
Little Pear and Cinnamon Cakes
1 medium pear, cored and quartered, chopped into small cubes
1 1/3 cups (150g) oats, ground into flour
1/4 cup mild flavour oil
1/4 cup plain yoghurt
1 egg
1/3 cup coconut sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tblsp coconut sugar, extra
Preheat oven to 180C, grease a mini muffin tray.
Whisk yoghurt, egg, oil and sugar in large bowl till combined.
Stir through ground oats and baking powder.
Add chopped pear and mix well.
Drop spoonfuls of mix into mini muffin tray.
Combine cinnamon and extra sugar in small bowl, sprinkle generously on cakes.
Bake 180C 20mins, cool in tray before removing.
I hope you enjoy!

PS I work with women in midlife who are standing at the edge of change, sometimes ready, sometimes just curious. If that’s you, you’re welcome to reach out and see if walking together feels right.
